The Superkart is a high-performance go-kart that has shifted from a traditional gas-powered engine to an electric powertrain. It boasts an AC induction motor that delivers over 80 ft*lbs of instant torque to the wheels, reaching speeds of more than 100 km/h.

This kart served as our team's proof of concept, employing scaled-down components typically found in full-sized electric vehicles. This created an ideal platform for team members to gain hands-on experience and knowledge of EV systems.

The kart is powered by HPEV’s 48 V AC-9 motor, affixed to the chassis using custom aluminum mounting plates. To accommodate the unique cylindrical profile of the motor, the mounts were shifted to the rear of the kart, necessitating an extension of the chassis.

To accommodate the increased power of the electric motor, the chain drive system was upgraded to a #40 chain with a 6:11 gear ratio. This configuration provides the optimal balance between acceleration and top speed.

The SuperKart's battery system consists of 16 prismatic cells wired in series, resulting in a comprehensive system voltage of 51.2 V. The health of the cells is maintained by a battery management system, which actively tracks the SOC (state of charge), temperatures, and discharge/charge currents. This enables timely intervention to safeguard the cells.

The battery packs are housed within aluminum containers with active fan-based cooling systems to maintain appropriate battery temperature during use. Additionally, both enclosures are designed with removable lids for easy access and servicing of the cells.

The SuperKart employs the CAN bus protocol to facilitate communication among the motor controller, battery management system, and various on-board sensors. This integration enables the central Raspberry Pi-based computer to monitor and collect essential data, such as vehicle speed, system temperatures, and battery performance. This data is conveniently displayed on the touchscreen dashboard positioned next to the driver's steering wheel, providing real-time insights for a streamlined and informed driving experience.
